Mayday Organizers Take A Stand Against Violation Of First Amendment Rights

[Los Angeles, CA, 30 May 2025] — Organizers of the Mayday USA event have been denied a permit for their event on Hollywood Boulevard on May 31, 2025. After consulting with Liberty Council, organizers of Mayday USA have determined that this permit denial constitutes a violation of First Amendment rights, given that the city approved a permit for LA Pride to host the exact same type of event in the exact same location the next weekend (celebrating their community and standing for their rights).

Mayday USA applied for two different types of permits: originally, the organization applied for a First Amendment permit. This permit was denied because the city believed the event was not a protest but rather a concert/performance. They were then told to apply for a BOSS permit, which is for concerts and events. The department that approves the BOSS permits denied the permit request, stating that they “[do] not approve protest or freedom of speech permits.”

Liberty Council informed Mayday USA that this is a type of denial by delay—an effort to cause organizers to give up on the permit applications.

Mayday USA was then encouraged by the city to apply for a last-minute permit to hold the event on a small side street, which, as of this writing, has not been approved. The organizers believe this is an obvious effort by the city to relegate a religious protest out of the public eye. In addition, this potential permit was extremely limited in its scope: the city refused to allow baptisms and informed the organization that there would be severe prohibitions on singing and speaking. The city added that long periods of singing would not be covered under a First Amendment permit because it does not qualify as free speech.

The city also continued to refer to the organizers as a part of "California Will Be Saved," which has previously held events on Hollywood Boulevard. This is false; Mayday USA is not affiliated with California Will Be Saved and has never held an event on Hollywood Boulevard. The permit application was submitted by Tetelestai Ministries, DBA as Her Voice MVMT.

Citizens of America are legally allowed to exercise their First Amendment rights without interference from the government. Therefore, despite the city's permit denials, Mayday USA will be held on Hollywood Boulevard tomorrow, May 31, at 3:30 p.m. as a First Amendment-protected protest.

This action has been sanctioned by the city, as organizers were told, “You can always exercise your rights in the public right of way, in a safe, legal, and reasonable way, without a permit and if your event grows in size, the Police Department will of course facilitate that.”

Organizers have notified and invited representatives from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and city officials, and are hopeful that they will be on-site to help ensure our right to a safe and peaceful protest.

The protest is being backed by Che Ahn of Harvest Ministries International, as well as a network of over 800 churches in 72 countries. Che Ahn and Liberty Council have previously won a religious freedom lawsuit in the US Supreme Court against California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Attendees of the Mayday USA event are encouraged to arrive at 3:30 pm at 6825 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA, 90028. Mayday USA also requests that attendees bring flags and signs that support the First Amendment rights of free speech and the free exercise of religion.
